Charemei Gefilte Fish

  • 1 loaf of gefilte fish, defrosted in the fridge overnight

  • 1 bunch scallions, thinly sliced

  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper (optional but recommended)

  • 1/2 teaspoon MSG (optional, but can be substituted for salt

  • 1 jar Saturday Sauce *(I used spicy)

  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil

    Finish with:

  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon

  • Cilantro

  • A drizzle of quality olive oil

  • Challah to serve

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F

  2. In an ovenproof dish or pan, spread half of the Saturday Sauce.

  3. In a bowl, mix the gefilte fish with the scallions, white pepper, and MSG if using. Form into balls to the best of your ability and drop them into the sauce.

  4. Cover with the remaining Saturday Sauce and drizzle with the neutral oil.

  5. Cover the pan and place it in the oven for 25 minutes. Uncover and cook another 10 minutes.

  6. Top with lemon juice and zest. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with cilantro.

  7. Serve warm with Challah
